AMD have begun shipping 12-core processors

AMD said that the world first 12-core processor, code “Magny-Cours” new Opteron server chips, has begun shipping and get an income.

AMD spokesman Phil Hughes said: “Before nearly 30 days, we actively provide the equivalent of retail products to customers (12-core processor) samples. In fact we have already shipped a limited number of new products in order to allow preparing customer-oriented official launch scheduled later this quarter. ”

Magny-Cours will be called as Opteron 6100 series, using new Socket G34 slot, 1.7-2.3GHz frequency range, including low power version, standard version and high-performance version, with the average power consumption respectively 85W, 115W, and 140W. At the same time, the memory controller and three class cache is lower than the current six core products.

Magny-Cours has 12 core as well as four-channel memory controller, high-speed inter-chip interconnects technology. At the same time it will have to face the strong competition of Intel Xeon family, which is not only contain the new Nehalem micro-architecture and 32nm process technology, but also introduced the RAS technology which can only find in Intel Itanium, IBM Power, Sun UltraSPARC processors in the past.
