If you want a keyboard case with a kick stand that fits the Toshiba Thrive perfectly, then you should consider this one…, September 20, 2011

This review is from: GSAstore ™ – Toshiba Thrive Leather Case with Built-in USB Keyboard and Kick Stand – Custom Designed By GSAstore with a TAB on TOP. Guaranteed compatible with Honeycomb Android 3.0/3.1. One year seller warranty. Fits Toshiba Thrive. (Toshiba Thrive Tablet NOT included) (Electronics)

I have been using this keyboard case for about 5 days now (ordered it from amazon.com) and have been enjoying it ever since. So I thought I should give a review on this since no one else has done so (and this is my first review of any product on amazon =] ).

So here’s my pros and cons of this keyboard case.

    **********Pros**********
    1. Setup is very simple. Just plug and play.

    2. Keyboard buttons are hard and easy to press and they’re also not soft and rubbery either (so no key slippage).

    3. The keyboard case and the toshiba thrive together feels somewhat light for me (about 2.8 pounds).

    4. I connected the keyboard case to my HP Windows 7 PC and my Gateway Windows 7 laptop. I was able to use it on both devices with no problems (so the case should be compatible with other devices with a usb port).

    5. The kick stand and the top bendable leather latch both have magnets which is nice for keeping the stand and latch from hanging out.

    6. The toshiba thrive tablet fits perfectly in the keyboard case. Takes a little effort to put the tablet in place, but latches on the case keep the tablet from falling out, especially when case is closed. I couldn’t find a bluetooth keyboard case that would fit perfectly with the thrive, especially one designed for the thrive. But this keyboard case is the next big thing).

    7. This case is a 3 in 1 deal… meaning that the case comes with a kick stand, a built in keyboard, and of course the case itself. So you don’t have to go out and buy sepearte products to get these 3 funcionalities.

    8. When the thrive is in sleep mode, if you hold the space bar (or maybe any key) for about 5+ seconds, you can wake up the tablet.

    9. When the tablet is attached with the keyboard, you can fold the part with the keyboard all the way to the back of the tablet. good for reading in portrait mode)

    10. The setup of the keys on the keyboard is the same as the ones found on a windows keyboard or a windows laptop (so you don’ have to learn a completely new keyboard layout).

    11. Keyboard case doesn’t need to be charged in order to be used.

    **********Cons**********
    1. On some applications (like logmein or any android word processor), the F1 through F12 keys don’t work, as well as the ctrl key, page break, print screen, and the Fn key. (probably those keys are not supported in the apps or something because those keys work on my windows 7 devices.

Solution: But there are some dedicated keys on those apps that have the F1-F12 functionality as well as the ones listed here.

    2. If you notice the placement of the connected usb cable on the amazon photos, I can’t insert my headphones when the toshiba camera is on the left side of the keyboard. i need the headphones to watch videos or listen to music in the library or on the bus.

Solution: But if you face the camera on the right side of the keyboard, insert the tablet starting from the bottom left side first of the case with the tablet latch open, then sliding the right side in place will allow you to use the headphones and the usb port (But the mini usb and HDMI ports are blocked because of the left latch on the case. You can just flip it on the other side if needed.)

    3. Doesn’t have a hole on the case to take snap shots or record.

Solution: It’s a little weird taking photos with the case attached. You can just detach the tablet from the case and record.

    4. No bluetooth connectivity or usb ports on keyboard.

Solution: You can use a usb hub (which is an extra device that gives you more usb ports). That way you can connect multiple usb drives along with the keyboard case.

    5. The 2 stylus pen holders are too small.

Solution: You can just stick the thin pen cap inserter thingy rather than the whole pen itself through the pen holders.

    6. The keyboard case doesn’t charge the thrive.

Solution: You can get an android app called Juice Defender to save you some battery life (not really a solid solution for the case, but it’s better than nothing.)

    —————————————————————————————————————————
All in all, I’m very satisfied with this keyboard case despite some of the cons listed.

Also, I’m a computer science student and I take notes on the thrive. Some people in my class take notes on their laptop and just whipping out my toshiba thrive with the keyboard case makes me blend in a little more. It would be just weird if I had to carry a sepearte keyboard in my backpack and expose it to everyone.

I also carry the thrive and case together around the house. When I’m cooking or waiting for food to get ready, I can just start typing and searching for anything…

I bought this case so when I attend meetings, I need not carry a laptop to type. I just use this in combination with my toshiba thrive(10″) and puff!! a laptop.

There are two downsides however, the rear camera can’t be used with the case on, and secondly the rubber guard for the usb and hdmi slot have to be moved out of the way when using the keyboard as the usb wire connecting the keyboard to the thrive sticks out when in usage. Not a smooth finish!! A litle tacky perhaps. But hey it works.

I have however have a second case which I utilised when performing general media content consuming tasks(browsing the web, reading, shopping on this site etc)
